Epoxy and polyaspartic are both common garage floor coatings, and they're often used together rather than as an either/or choice. Here's how they actually compare, especially for a hot, high-UV climate like El Paso's.
Epoxy typically takes longer to cure — often requiring a full 24-72 hours before light traffic and longer for full cure. Polyaspartic cures much faster, sometimes allowing same-day return to service, which matters if you can't have your garage out of commission for days.
This is where the two diverge most for a desert climate: standard epoxy can yellow or amber over time with UV exposure, while polyaspartic resists UV yellowing significantly better — a real consideration for a garage that gets direct sun through an open door for much of the day.
Both can perform well against hot tire pickup (the lifting/marking that happens when a summer-heated tire sits on the coating) when properly cured and applied at adequate thickness — under-cured or thin coatings of either type are more vulnerable.
Epoxy is generally the more cost-effective base-coat material. Polyaspartic tends to cost more per coat but often needs fewer coats due to faster build and cure.
A common, well-performing approach uses an epoxy base coat for cost-effective build and adhesion, topped with a polyaspartic clear or pigmented topcoat for UV resistance and fast cure. This gets the cost benefit of epoxy with the durability benefit of polyaspartic on the surface that actually sees UV and wear.
